I think the ...So impressed by your writing, Lubna!
I think the main reason why the Common Man tries to avoid tax (apart from the most-heard one of "my money! keep your paws off!!!") has to be that it is far too convoluted to understand. It is all far too wordy and inside-out with too many clauses and conditions. The only thing he finally gets into his head is "Pay, pay, pay".
By the time he finally makes sense of it, it is the next year and a new Budget already and they've moved on to a new set of gibberish!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33143124.post-12772635406777762762012-04-01T10:00:07.901+05:302012-04-01T10:00:07.901+05:30@Kay: Very true. Do we appreciate companies that walk that extra mile towards being honest and transparent? or green? or employee friendly? As consumers we want the best price for the product/service, as shareholders we want the best market price.
But I can see a change - many companies donate back to society, they concentrate on issues like sustainability, they are more transparent to the media and thus to the public. Amen for such changes.
Best
LubnaLubnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952407396902290193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33143124.post-36605278714649070172009-04-23T09:33:00.000+05:302009-04-23T09:33:00.000+05:30What a great blog! For example, in the US govt is using public money to bail out banks. In India a lot of tax payer money goes to support corruption and stealing (say of electricity).

How does one respond to such people? I still believe that paying taxes is a good thing, but I dont know enough to rebut concerns like the ones above.L. Such arguments generally claim that the statutes fail to create a duty to pay taxes, that such statutes do not impose the income tax on wages or other types of income claimed by the tax protesters, or that provisions within the statutes exempt the tax protesters from a duty to pay. Other arguments contend that the Internal Revenue Service is not authorized by statute to assess income taxes, to seize assets to satisfy tax claims, or to penalize persons who fail to file a return or pay the tax assessed.

These kinds of arguments are distinguished from related constitutional arguments and general conspiracy arguments. Statutory arguments presuppose that Congress has the constitutional power to assess a tax on incomes, but that the Congress has simply failed to impose the tax by statute. Supporters of such arguments may or may not be inclined to contend that constitutional and conspiracy arguments apply as well.

The courts that have been presented with such arguments have ruled them to be spurious, unpersuasive, frivolous, or all three.Leigh Feuersteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05246857787872568525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33143124.post-69603277434910589212008-05-18T13:53:00.000+05:302008-05-18T13:53:00.000+05:30You sure do need a break.
